Believe it or not despite the unappealing name, butt candles have actually been quite popular as recently as the 1920s and 1940s. In fact, they were really big in the United States in the late 1800s. The more formal name for them, of course, is suppository. With that said, suppositories have gone through quite a bit of a reversal of fortune. It used to be that people actually preferred administering all sorts of chemical compounds into their system through suppositories.
What has changed? Well, it really is a technological and chemical evolution because as pharmaceutical companies pioneered and discovered better and better pills, there’s less need to shove wax items containing all sorts of chemicals up where the sun don’t shine. It really is that simple. If given a choice, most people would rather pop a pill than shove something up their butt. I mean, think about it. It’s hard enough remembering to take your pills on time. Can you imagine having to keep a schedule so you can administer suppositories? You’d have to rush to the bathroom and make sure that there’s nobody around and then take care of business. Talk about a hassle.
Negative Association with Butt Administration
Let’s get real here. Of all the body parts you have, the most insecure part is probably your butt. It already feels awkward for you to put your finger up there. Can you imagine putting a product up there? So it’s not a surprise that people would be a little bit defensive and feel kind of awkward putting a foreign body up in their anal tract.
Bad Formulations from the Past
If you’re the type of person who doesn’t really mind using suppositories, you might still have a bad taste in your mouth. Seriously. Why? In the past, there were all sorts of bad products that were formulated in a less than optimal way. They melt too easily or there was not enough medication in the compound or worse yet, they used the wrong medication. Whatever the case may be, these products were either not that effective or they were too effective and causing an adverse reaction.
It’s no surprise that a lot of people developed a negative association between suppositories, thanks to this earlier generation of products. Thankfully, those bad old days are gone. They’re in the past because most butt candle products, if not 100 percent of them, are manufactured with the highest quality standards in mind.
It’s easy for a lot of people to get gunshy about butt candles or suppositories because the early 1900s wasn’t exactly the golden age of American pharmacology and pharma retailing. Do keep in mind that the US FDA wasn’t formed until later. Up until that point in time, when government put its stamp on drug research and commercialization, the consumer was pretty much on his own. The old saying ‘buyer beware’ was definitely in play and despite the best care, too many consumers still ended up getting burned. No wonder people are now skeptical of treatments from that bygone era.
